Every few months, someone puts out a new ranking of AI tools — ChatGPT here, Claude there, Gemini and Grok jockeying for the middle slots — and the internet argues about it for a week. These lists are fun, and they're not wrong, exactly. But they're increasingly measuring the wrong thing. Most rankings still ask which model gives the smartest answer. That was the right question in 2023. It is not the right question anymore. The AI tools worth paying attention to now aren't the ones that answer questions best — they're the ones that finish the job.
