The Constitution Just Reasserted Itself

There are moments when the Supreme Court does something rare: it simply tells a president no. On June 30, 2026, in Trump v. Barbara, the Court did exactly that, striking down President Trump's first-day executive order seeking to end automatic birthright citizenship for children born on U.S. soil to undocumented or temporarily present parents. In a 6–3 decision written by Chief Justice John Roberts, the Court reaffirmed what the text of the Fourteenth Amendment has said since 1868: if you are born in the United States, you are a citizen, full stop.
